Tamar Ackerman is presently enrolled as a graduate student at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Education, Culture, and Development, where she studies art therapy. In April 2011, Ackerman successfully presented a thesis entitled “The Role of the Art Therapist as a Maternal Object of Transference: Children with Attachment Disorders,” and expects to receive a Master of Arts in January 2012. A recipient of a Bronfman Jewish Artist Fellowship, Ackerman has shown her artwork in a number of exhibitions at locations such as the Center for Jewish History and the Bronfman Center Gallery.
Throughout her years in college and graduate school, Ackerman has completed art therapy internships with a range of organizations, including the Bronx Children’s Psychiatric Center; Kittay House, a home for seniors; and the Ittleson Center, an inpatient and outpatient psychiatric treatment program for children.

She previously worked as a children’s art instructor in New York City, and as a member of the art staff at Camp Moshava in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. More recently, as a staff person at the Rebecca School, Tamar Ackerman worked with young people between the ages of 5 and 19 diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders.
In addition, Tamar Ackerman is a member of Psi Chi, the national psychology honor society. Ackerman completed an undergraduate degree at New York University in 2008, where she graduated magna cum laude with majors in psychology and Jewish history. A dedicated volunteer, Ackerman has served institutions that include the Keren Or Institute of Jerusalem, Israel, as well as Beth Israel Hospital’s SOVRI Helpline, Lenox Hill Hospital, and the State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University Medical Center.
