Peacockes Hotel and Complex - Various Roles (Part-Time)

I worked for the Family business since the age of 13. Starting off with small jobs i.e. helping in the Craft Shop, Grocery Shop and Petrol Station.

In 2001 when the hotel opened, I worked in the new Service Station. Duties included; stocking of shelves, serving customers, closing the shop and responsibility for counting tills and end of day reports.

In later years I moved more into the hospitality side, starting in the restaurant. My father made me start from the bottom i.e. clearing tables, collecting glasses, and cleaning skirting boards. Once proving I could diligently do this, I started serving customers as a waitress.

When turning the legal age of eighteen, I started working in the bar also. This involved working many long and late hours, including functions such as weddings and banquets (almost guaranteeing at least a 15 hour shift).

I was then moved into the reception after pleading with my father for more experience. Duties involved; checking guests in and out, assisting guests with tourist information and any queries. This also involved dealing with the cash and the change within the hotel. End of shifts duties also included daily reports and an efficient handover to the Night Porter and receptionist next on duty.

Whist in Peacockes I also got to spend a summer working in our craft shop. Selling products such as Waterford and Galway Crystal, Arann Sweaters, Guinness Merchandise etc. I soon got involved with the buying and purchasing of stock. This role was great experience in learning the ways of retail.

Throughout the years I learnt many lessons working for the family business. I was never allowed special treatment and often had to spend longer proving myself. Witnessing the highs and lows of business first hand has been a truly invaluable lesson for me, something that not even the best University in the world I think can provide.
