The Basics of being an Architect

on 29 Dec 2018 21:53 | Viewed 83 times

Architects are defined as professionals who are educated and licensed in the art and science of the design elements and overall construction of structures such as houses and buildings. An architect is responsible for the creation of the structural and aesthetic appearance of said structures.

In addition, the architect must also ensure that the building they are developing is functional, secure, and economical as well. Also, it must be in accordance with the requirements specified by clients.

Education

Those who want to pursue architecture as a career must enroll in a Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch) and a Master of Architecture (M. Arch). The latter is optional and is completed subsequently.

Candidates must first earn a high school diploma or equivalent. This is a prerequisite for studying architecture professionally. As for the program itself, the length of the undergraduate degree is 4 years while a Masters program takes an additional 2-3 years to complete.

The Bachelors of Architecture curriculum covers a variety of topics based on pragmatic and aesthetics related subjects. Some examples include architecture history, building construction, structural steel design and CAD drawings as well.

Those who participate in a Masters program are able to augment their knowledge by studying courses such as architectural criticism, digital design techniques, building science and environmental architecture and sustainability.

Furthermore, architects are required to have a license in all fifty states of the country and a voluntary certification is also available. The job outlook for architects is also looking positive, with a 7% increase in total jobs until 2024.

The significant investment in terms of years spent studying is worthwhile, since the median annual salary for architects is around $80,000.

Employment

Research has delineated that 80% of qualified architects are employed in firms with less than 10 employees. Only a mere 2% of the architects work in firms with more than a 100 employees.

As part of their work, architects are expected to use software such as AutoCAD, an application considered the industry leader in two dimensional drawing programs. It enables architects to create building plans, sections and elevations as well.

Revit (BIM) is another software that is commonly used by architects. It allows three dimensional renderings of buildings. Other examples of applications include Adobe Photoshop and 3DS Max.
