Since the mid-1970s, Dennis Franchione has been leading college football teams to victory. Dennis Franchione began his career coaching high school football after graduating from Pittsburg State University in Kansas. His first college football coaching venture occurred at Kansas State University, where he served as an Assistant Coach. In 1981, he became the Head Coach of Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, leading the team to two outstanding seasons. Over his tenure, Dennis Franchione pushed the team to a 14-4-2 record. The players won a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference title along with the Sunflower Bowl.

Dennis Franchione then spent two years with Tennessee Tech University as an Offensive Coordinator. In 1985, he returned to Pittsburg to become the Head Coach for his alma mater. Over a 5-year period, Mr. Franchione led the Gorillas to achieve an impressive 53-6 record, including 37-1 in conference. His success with the team earned him the designation of National Coach of the Year twice.
