Developed by a native resident of Brooklyn, TransGas Energy Systems, LLC intends to build a sophisticated cogeneration power plant on the bank of the East River. Employing a state-of-the-art cogeneration approach, the TransGas Energy Systems facility will provide enough electricity for 10 percent of New York City's peak needs with minimal impact on the environment.

TransGas Energy Systems chose its proposed, eight-acre site for several reasons. It provides access to needed infrastructure elements, including wastewater and steam delivery. In addition, the site cannot be used for many other purposes. Serving as home to various industrial projects over the past 100 years, it has experienced significant contamination, making it unsuitable for most uses. TransGas Energy Systems intends to clean up and redevelop the location.

In addition, TransGas Energy Systems' cogeneration facility will minimally impact the local environment. While older generation power plants rely on potable water for their steam processes, TransGas Energy Systems will employ wastewater instead, lessening the impact on local resources. The plant will not need to draw water for cooling or other uses from either the East or Hudson Rivers. The site's cogeneration technology also significantly reduces emissions, and as TransGas Energy Systems replaces old plants being retired, it should lead to a significant improvement in air quality for residents of the area. Another way that TransGas Energy Systems seeks to reduce the impact of the plant involves placing it underground. Only a slim, attractive tower will protrude from the ground, with the rest of the facility covered by a park available for public use.
